Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) was founded in 1985 through an Act of Parliament. It offers high-quality education through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode. Currently, the public university has 67 regional centres, 21 schools, 29 international partner institutions, around 2,665 learner support centres and more than 3 million students.

It offers around 228 certificate, degree, diploma and doctoral programmes in various fields of education. IGNOU was upgraded to the South Asian region's STRIDE (Staff Training and Research Institute of Distance Education) in 1993.

Indira Gandhi National Open University Scholarships

All applicants have to pay the full fee at the time of admission. However, IGNOU students from reserved categories (Physically Handicapped, Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes) are entitled to fee reimbursement from the governments of their states. Also, the university's students are eligible for the National Centre for Promotion of Employment of Disabled People (NCPEDP) scholarship scheme for postgraduate level programmes. A. Yes. IGNOU is a trusted and accredited government distance education university. It is a central university which was established by an act of parliament in 1985. Therefore, a distance education degree from IGNOU is equivalent to a degree granted by any accredited university in India.

A. Although, DU SOL is 23 years older than IGNOU, yet the latter has an edge over the former in the following ways:

  • DU SOL has limited courses to offer as compared to IGNOU that provides a wide range of courses which are more than 200 in number
  • In DU SOL, the students are required to go for classes and exam centres assigned strictly by the university. Whereas in IGNOU, it provides the facility to select the nearest location so that it’s easy for the students to commute
  • The DU SOL degree does not have the same value as that of IGNOU when it comes to studying abroad. IGNOU is recognized well across Asia and in many commonwealth countries
