About Shivaji University, [SUK] Kolhapur

Shivaji University, Kolhapur is located in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Established in 1962, the name of the University is named in memory of the Great Maratha Warrior and the founder of the Maratha Empire Chhatrapati Shivaji. The inauguration of the University was done by Dr. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India. The students are studying in 280 Shivaji affiliated colleges and recognized institutes and there are 34 Post-graduate Departments currently. In that century, Kolhapur became one of the leading cities to give educational opportunities for all classes and communities of South-Western Maharashtra and Northern parts of Karnataka. The college always aimed for making opportunities for higher studies for rural youth for the growth and development of the region.

The University raised its standard of teaching and research by taking various steps to make the University to global standards by introducing higher studies and research in the areas like Industrial Chemistry, Space Science, Environmental Science, and all the areas included in basic Science disciplines. The Department of Physics has been recognized as the Department of Research Support by UGC for its Special Assistance Programs. The University has also introduced the University-Industry Interaction Cell and also a Center for Women's Studies and extension activities that is the indication of change. The Department of Economics also for its Special Assistance Programme has been selected by UGC and the other Departments also offering courses in areas like Environmental Science.

SUK has established a unique scheme for the meritious students called 'Shivaji University Merit Scholarship' offering 500 scholarships and also initiated research fellowship for Ph.D. students in the PG Departments. This is the first University to introduce such a scheme in India. The excellence of the University made it recognized by UGC, DST, DBT and the academic and pursuit of excellence made it facilitated by efficient administration. The organizational structure of the University is based on the provisions in the Maharashtra University Act 1994 & rules under this Act. The authorities of SUK ARE the Senate, Management Council, Academic Council, the faculty, the Board of College & University Development, the Board of Directors, the Board of Interdisciplinary Studies, the Board of Examination, the Board of Adult & Continuing Education & Extension Services, the Students Council & such other bodies.

Shivaji University Admissions are based on merit and provide UG, PG, Diploma, and Certification Programs to the interested students who wish to pursue higher education. The University has approximately 80 courses ranging from Science, Humanities, Commerce, Law, and Engineering. This University is dedicated to promote and foster a culture of high-quality teaching and learning and to serving needs by inspiring, generating, and advance excellence in research and augmentation activities. Moreover, the Institute meets the social, cultural, educational, and economic needs of the region as well as the country. The program Universal Human Value Education covers topics such as Moral Capabilities, the world in Transition, Attraction to beauty/perfection, thirst for knowledge, morality & spirituality, the oneness of mankind. The objective of this program is to build up experimental learning to improve the participant's capabilities and to teach them the practicing service of mankind and encouraging social transformation.
