The Greek philosopher Aristotle discussed on the mechanics of vision and Roger Bacon, the English Philosopher felt the importance ofstudying the vision system to develop practical methods to improve human vision after spectacles were already introduced in 1300 A.D

The Optometry is an Exact Science of Vision with absolute independence and is such a vast subject that in no country it has been found convenient to include it in the curriculum as a mere adjunct to medical education and establish accordingly under legal protection since over 100 years.

In India, the study of Optometry, as a Science and Profession, was not given a thought in the past until it was realised by Prof. A.K. Banerjea, who qualified himself in England in Optometry in 1928, and came back to India with the dream of training educated youth in optometry.

By looking towards the mass ignorances of the eye health he, by his indigenous effort established a centre to bring out properly trained Optometrists for providing specialized Opto-Visual Services to the public. It stands as the pioneering national venture to build a platform for the study of Optometrical Sciences in India. Hence, The Indian Optical Institute & Refraction Hospital Trust, founded by Prof. Banerjea it the year 1932, Calcutta is trying to follow his ideals by truning out, within its limited means, full fledged Doctors of Optometry or Optometrists every year who are serving the need of the people successfully.
