The territorial jurisdiction of the University extends to the whole of the State of Kerala. The Headquarters of the University is located in the scenic hilly terrain of Pookode, Wayanad, in the State of Kerala, with a land area of approximately 100 acres. Accessibility: By road: From Kozhikode 60 km, along NH 212. Nearest bus stop is Veterinary University bus stop at Pookode. Nearest Railway Station: Kozhikode (60km), Nearest Airport: Calicut International Airport.
The University encompasses three faculties- the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, the Faculty of Dairy Science and the Faculty of Poultry Science; and eight constituent colleges- the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Mannuthy in Thrissur district and Pookode in Wayanad district, the College of Dairy Science and Technology located at Mannuthy, Pookode, Thiruvananthapuram & Kolahalamedu, College of Avian Sciences and Management located at Thiruvazhamkunnu and College of Food Technology at Thumburmuzhy, Thrissur District. Bioscience Research and Training Centre (BRTC) has been set up at Bio 360 Life Science park at Thonnakkal, Thiruvananthapuram. The University has wide network of instructional and research farms spread throughout the state, which include the Instructional farms attached to College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Pookode, Livestock Farm and Fodder Research & Development Scheme at Mannuthy, Livestock Research Station, Thiruvazhamkunnu, Palakkad, University Poultry and Duck Farm, Mannuthy, Centre for Pig Production and Research, Mannuthy, Goat and Sheep Farm, Mannuthy, Cattle Breeding Farm, Thumburmuzhy and Base Farm, Kolahalamedu.
KVASU hosts the All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Poultry, Centre for Advanced Studies in Poultry Science and Centre for Advanced Studies in Animal Breeding and Genetics at Mannuthy. The University has initiated inter-disciplinary schools and centres, with emerging academic features of importance. They are School of Bio-Energy studies and farm waste management, School of Applied Production and Biotechnology, School of Zoonosis, Public Health and Pathobiology, School of New Media and Research, School of Animal Nutrition and Feed Technology, Centre for Wildlife Studies, Centre for Animal Adaptation to Environment and Climate Change Studies, Centre for Ethno- pharmacology, Centre for Livestock Development and Policy Research, Centre for Small Laboratory Animal Production, Central Instrumentation Laboratory & Central Store, Centre for One Health Education, Advocacy, Research and Training (COHEART) under Dept, of Veterinary Public Health. The University strive to improve its infrastructure to progress to international level; to function as tropical referral and training center in the area of tropical Animal production and Veterinary medicine; to offer multidisciplinary courses in the area of Veterinary and Animal Sciences including Wildlife Science and improving the employment opportunities and entrepreneurship in the sector within and out of the country; to strengthen the bond between the scientists and the farmers by speedy technology transfer to support the country’s target of doubling the farmers income within a short span of time.
KVASU has Memorandum of Understanding with University of Edinburgh, University of Western Australia (UWA), University of Calgary, University of Minnesota, University of Connecticut, University of GUELPH, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, National Diary Development Board, National Meat and Poultry Processing Board, National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology, Kerala Agricultural University, Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment, Kerala Forest Research Institute, Kerala Forest Department, Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation, Kottackal Arya Vaidyasala, Kudumbasree, State Poverty Mission, Kerala Livestock Development Board, Community Biodiversity Centre- M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation etc. The Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has been able to develop healthy liaisoning and strong rapport with Animal Husbandry Department, Dairy Development Department, NABARD and State Planning Board.The collaboration with international universities such as University of Edinburgh, University of Western Australia (UWA),University of Bristol and University of Calgary has already been utilized for academic research and extension programmes of KVASU.
KVASU scholarships, fellowships and assistantships are provided to meritorious students. Merit scholarship is awarded to top 10 per cent of the meritorious under graduate students of each batch of degree programme in all colleges under KVASU. Merit cum Means scholarship is instituted to a maximum of 12 financially backward non-SC/ST students of each batch of under graduate programme of B.V.Sc.&A.H .and B.Tech. (Dairy Sci. 8c Tech.) of all colleges under KVASU. Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Senior Research fellowship (SRF) is awarded to the students admitted for postgraduate and Ph.D. students respectively. A fixed number of deserving candidates admitted for Masters and Ph.D. degree programmes are eligible for assistantship intended for candidates planning a research/teaching career, eligibility decided based on the rank list prepared for this purpose. Research grant is allowed to post graduate and Ph.D. students conducting research. The University distributes about 2.7 crores per annum in the form of various scholarships, fellowships and assistantships.
University Headquarters at Pookode campus has a fully equipped gymnasium, renovated Auditorium ‘Kabani’ and Open Air Theatre ‘Chandragiri’ for use of staff and students of KVASU. Facilities for equestrian training are available for students both at Mannuthy and Pookode campuses. The web-enabled University Library has vast collection of books, journals, and online access to e-journals viz. www. cera.jccc.in; e-books: www.wileyonlinelibrary.com, open source softwares (Institutional Repository) and Koha (Library management) software. The University established Expedient Integrated University Management System (IUMS), a comprehensive software solution which automates various academic & non-academic functionalities of KVASU.
As we move to 2019 we have a brief history of significant development, of commitment, vision and action, true to our adage ‘Ideas In Action’. We were the recipient of Chancellors award for the Emerging young University for two consecutive years (2016-17 and 2017-18).Though we have a long way to go to raise our institution to a world class level, through the vision delivered by the excellent leadership shared by the staff, students and the faculty, the University is destined to acclaim this accolade.
