Government Medical College, Kozhikode was founded college in 1957 by Dr. B. Ramakrishna Rao. It is affiliated to the Kerala University for Health and Sciences and serves 2/5 of the population of Kerala. The college offers various Undergraduate, Diploma and Postgraduate courses in Medical Science

• The College was opened by Sri. E. M. S, Chief Minister, Kerala state on 15th March, 1959
• The annual intake of undergraduate students was increased from 50 to 250
• In1970s, the college started postgraduate medical education in various branches. Now the college provides PG in 28 disciplines
• During the last decade almost all modern specialty services in medical centre have been developed in the college facilities for Whole Body Scan & Kidney Transplant
•  Well-equipped Tele Cobalt Therapy & Cath Labs are latest additions to the hospital complex
• It started as a 100 bedded specialty hospital for respiratory diseases.  
• A well-equipped Medical Education Unit was also started. The Dental College which was earlier attached to Medical College has been separated and is functioning independently
• The college also conducts in Pharmacy, Nursing, Lab technician training, training of Radiological Assistants and Ophthalmic Assistants
• The college has facilitated computer facility in Medical library & all departmental laboratories
• The college is sprawled over an extensive area of 270 acres (1.1 km²) and is located about 10 km east from the heart of Kozhikode

Alumni:

• Dr.Vinod Scaria of 42nd batch has been recently in news for sequencing the human genome for the first time in India
• Prof. Sasidharan P.K from 1982 batch is famous for his studies on malnutrition in India.

Learning Resource Centre:

• Digital Library with a server computer and 23 terminals, 24 hour broad band internet connection with access to most of the medical text books and e-journals
• The Learning Resource Centre (LRC), Kozhikode is set up in an area of 1100 Sq ft inside theMedical College library. The state-of-the-art facility consists of linux systems having 16 high-end
• PC workstations with 100 MBPS interconnectivity
• High speed Internet connections (2 Mbps) enables direct Internet access, required for net-based subscriptions such as Medline, Up-to-Date, etc.

Scholarships:

• Dr Sushila Karunakaran Memorial Prize- Awarded to the MBBS student of Calicut Medical College, securing highest marks in Community, Medicine Examination of Calicut University
• Kishore Vyjnanic Yojanan Prakashan Scholarship- Students are encouraged to do short term research projects and trained to get acquainted with research activities. These project report are submitted to ICMR for eligibility to gain the KVYP scholarship
