Indian Institute of Technology Madras or IIT Madras (IITM), is a public-funded engineering institution based in Chennai. A constituent of the Indian Institutes of Technology system, IITM has been recognized as an Institute of National Importance. Founded in 1959, IITM was the third establishment under the Institutes of Technology Act (1961) of Indian Government. It was set up as a result of the first Indo-German Agreement signed in Bonn. The institute has been rated the top engineering institution by the National Institutional Ranking Framework for four consecutive years - 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

IITM has 16 academic departments and numerous research centres with about 550 academic instructors, 8000 students and 1250 administrative and supporting staff members. It offers postgraduate and undergraduate programmes in distinct disciplines of engineering, technology and pure sciences.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras Admission Process

The candidates must fill an online application form first to secure admission at IITM. B.Sc. and M.Sc. admissions are granted based on marks scored by the applicants in the Joint Admission Test to MSc (JAM) conducted by the institute. Admission to B.Tech and Dual Degree (B.Tech with M.Tech) programmes at the institute is based on the JEE-Advanced rank of the candidates. Those seeking admission for MBA must have a valid score in Common Admission Test (CAT). Candidates with valid GATE score are eligible for M.S. and M.Tech programmes. For 5-year integrated Master of Arts programmes, the applicants must clear the IITM specific Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE).

The Training and Placement Office of IITM maintains relationships with various companies and organizations to provide job opportunities to students. It invites several companies and organizations to the campus for placement drives. In the academic year of 2018-19, 1151 students were hired in leading organizations.
