It was founded in the year 1881 as Baroda College and renamed as the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in the year 1949. There are about 20 courses offered at both UG and PG level and 29 specializations for the Ph.D. program. MSU admission is done on the basis of state or national level entrance exams score. For some course, the university conducts its own entrance test while for some courses, the selection is done on the basis of candidates marks obtained in last qualifying exams.

The admission procedure at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda is as diverse as its range of offerings. Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda offers Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) program under a wide range of specializations with the total annual intake of 570 seats. The course duration for each of the specializations is four years respectively.
In addition to the B.E program, the university also offers two other technical degree courses namely, B.Arch (Bachelor of Architecture) and B.Des (Bachelor of Design) with the intake capacity of 40 and 70 seats, respectively. The B.Arch program is of five years while the B.Des program is offered for four years.
Admission to the B.Arch program is done through National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) which is conducted by Council of Architecture, New Delhi. However, candidates must have to pass in the 10+2 level examination with PCM subject combination and obtain minimum required marks.
Admission to the B.Des program is done through an Aptitude test followed by a Personal interview round. Selection will be done on the basis of the candidate’s performance in the Aptitude test and Personal interview.

Apart from the Technical courses, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda offers a wide range of undergraduate level courses in various fields of Arts, Science, Commerce, Education, Liberal Arts, Library and Information Science, Social Work and Legal Studies.
The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree program is offered under twenty-eight different specializations including Foreign Language courses. The duration of all the undergraduate courses under Arts Department is three years.
The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) program is provided with fifteen different specializations with the course duration of three years for each specialization.
Apart from B.A. and B.Sc program, the university also offers B.Com.(Bachelor of Commerce), BLIS (Bachelor of Library Science), B.Ed.(Bachelor of Education), BVA (Bachelor of Visual Arts), B.S.W.(Bachelor of Social Work), LL.B. (Bachelor of Legislative Law), BJMC (Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication) degree programs. The course duration and intake vary for each of the programs.
Admissions to the B.A. programs (Apart from Performing Arts specializations) are done based on merit in the previous qualifying examination. For admission to any of the programs related to Performing Arts department [Performing Arts in Instrumental Music (Sitar-Violin), Performing Arts in Music (Vocal) and Performing Arts - Dramatics], candidates need to go through an Aptitude/ Entrance Test conducted by the university.
Admissions to all the B.Sc programs are done on the basis of merit in the 10+2 level examination or equivalent examination and performance in the Personal Interview. However, for admission to the B.Sc. program in Environmental Science, aspirants will have to appear in an Entrance Test conducted by the university.
Admissions to the B.Com and B.Ed programs are done based on Merit in the previous qualifying examination, while for the BSW (Bachelor of Social Work) program, candidates have to go through a Written Test, Group Discussion & Personal Interview.

Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda offers Master of Engineering (M.E.) program at the postgraduate level. The postgraduate level engineering program is offered under 23 different specializations for a duration period of two years for each. The total number of seats available for M.E admission is 244 (annual).
The students who have successfully qualified their Graduation in relevant branch of Engineering are eligible to seek admission in the M.E. program. However, the aspirants will have to appear in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
If seats remain vacant after granting admission to the GATE qualified candidates, such vacant seats shall be filled in from amongst the candidates appeared at Post Graduate Common Entrance Test (PGCET) in the current academic year conducted by The Admission Committee for Professional Courses, Gujarat.
Final selection will be done through Entrance Test followed by Personal interview round conducted by the respective department.
The university offers another postgraduate level technical program in the field of Fine Arts leading to the M.Des (Master of Design) degree. The program is offered for the course duration of two years with an annual intake of 20 seats.
For admission to the M.Des program, candidates are selected on the basis of merit in the Aptitude Test and performance in the Personal Interview round conducted by the university. However, candidates must hold a recognized Bachelor’s degree in the relevant discipline with at least 50% marks in aggregate, to apply for the M.Des program.

At the doctoral level, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda offers Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree program in 76 different research domains.
Candidate willing to pursue any of the doctoral programs, must have passed a Postgraduate program in respective subject or in an interdisciplinary subject with minimum 55% marks or 6 CGPI.
Admissions to the Ph.D programs are done through Ph.D Entrance Test (PET) exam conducted periodically by the M.S. University of Baroda. The candidates who have passed NET/SLET or GATE are exempted from the PET exam. The candidates having M.Phil. Degrees, in respective subject, are also exempted from qualifying PET exam.
