Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College, along with King (VII) Memorial Hospital, is one of the foremost medical schools and medical care institutions in India. Located in Mumbai, this college was founded in 1926. The college is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences. The college and hospital is the first Indian medical college to be staffed by fully qualified Indian doctors. Being the only college in India with a department of Sexology, it provides basic health care as well as advanced healthcare facilities in all fields of medicine and surgery. This institution provides free of cost treatment to the underprivileged sections of the society. The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai funds the college and hospital.

The Week ranked the college 12th among the medical colleges in India in 2017. It was ranked 8th by Outlook India and 7th by India Today.

Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College Admission Process

A common entrance test (MH-CET) takes place for state candidates willing to take admission in the undergraduate programme at Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College. The selected candidates will be called for counselling and verification of documents like:

1. 10th mark sheet and pass certificate (age proof)

2. 12th mark sheet

3. MH-CET mark sheet (for all MH-CET students)/ PMT mark sheet (for All India Students)

4. AIEE rank letter and selection letter (for all students)

5. Migration and transfer certificate

6. Physical fitness certificate

7. Caste certificate (if applicable)

8. Parents' income certificate

The fee of this college for an MBBS aspirant is much less as compared to the other medical colleges in India. The fee for a 1st-year MBBS student is INR 82,000 (as per 2016-17) including a deposit of INR 4,000. The fee for the reserved category ranges from INR 10-15,000 annually.

Scholarship/financial help is provided to the students of this college who belong to the economically weaker section of the society.

Following are some of the scholarships that are announced by the Gosumec Alumni Association:

(a) Indira Foundation's Motivation for Excellence Scholarships: Merit-based scholarship for financially needy students. The full fee of the selected students is paid for the entire course.

(b) Dr Brijlal Gupta Memorial Scholarship INR 30,000 per each academic year.

However, the eligibility for the above-mentioned scholarships are:

1. The student has to be an undergraduate medical student at Seth GS Medical College

2. The annual income of parents/guardians not exceeding INR 6,00,000 per year

3. Merit and economic status will be given equal importance.

Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College Special Programme for Students

There are various short-term courses provided by the college. A basic course on clinical anatomy (1 year), course on functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), certificate courses on cardiac anaesthesia and good clinical laboratory practices; Diploma courses in extracorporeal perfusion technology and training courses in Rheumatology.
