An autonomous higher educational institution, Stella Maris College was established in the year 1947. The college is a Catholic minority institution and is affiliated to the University of Madras. The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, which was founded by Mother Mary of the Passion in 1877, manages the college. In Madras, it was the first women’s college which offers masters in fine arts, economics and English.                                                                             

It offers undergraduate programmes in history & tourism, sociology, economics, plant biology & plant biotechnology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, advanced zoology & biotechnology, commerce, visual arts, psychology, corporate secretaryship, computer applications, accounting & finance, English language & life skills, business administration, English and social work.

Postgraduate programmes in mathematics, economics, English, history of fine arts, social work, international studies, public relations, commerce, chemistry, bioinformatics, biotechnology and information technology.

The college also provides vocational courses in food processing & quality control, sustainable energy management, M.Phil, PhD programmes in English, chemistry, social work, mathematics, fine arts, economics and PG diploma course in computer science.

The application form needs to be filled up by candidates and submitted. Candidates who have been provisionally selected will be called for an interview. For taking admission to BA (English) degree course and postgraduate programme, candidates have to secure qualifying marks in the entrance examination.

They also have to appear for an interview. Candidates selected for BVA course have to appear for an aptitude test and interview. In the aptitude test, questions will be asked on drawing and designing.

The college has a career guidance cell which arranges recruitment drive every year. It provides guidance to the students and organises training programmes for students of final year. It also offers assistance to students who want to pursue higher education.

At the end of the first year, the college provides internship opportunities to students who are pursuing M Sc degree in bioinformatics in well-known institutions like IGIB, NCBS, IBAB and IISc.
