SRHU was established in 1956 by the government of Uttarakhand. Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences is the first private medical college of the state and the first to introduce PhD in medical studies.

SRHU offers degrees in the field of Management, Engineering, Medical Science, Yoga Practice, and Technology. The University offers more than 62 UG, PG, and doctoral programmes in more than 46 teaching departments. Currently, there are more than 3000 faculty teaching several programmes at the University.

SRHU has collaborated with not only Indian Universities but also with Universities globally; a few to mention are IIT Roorkee, IBM, IBC International Business School, Denmark, Laurea University of Applied Sciences, Finland, Rostock University, Germany, AIIMS, and many more.

SRHU has been recognised as Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation by DSIR, Regional Center for Medical Education by MCI, Collaborative Centre for Cancer Research & Services by ICMR, and is a member of the American Heart Association, and Association of Indian Universities.
