Swinburne English Language Centre
Swinburne offers English language courses that help applicants to meet the minimum English language requirement. On successful completion of English for Academic Purposes at Swinburne, applicants may be granted direct entry to their chosen course, provided they also meet other entry requirements.
Note: Applicants are granted exceptions from providing English language proficiency test scores if they fall under any one of the following categories:
- Those who had English as language instruction during previous education
- Those who have completed GCE ‘O’ level English with a minimum grade of ‘C’
- Applicants with completed an International Baccalaureate

Swinburne University offers admission to more than 140 undergraduate programs across the fields of business, engineering, media and communications, health sciences, science, information technology, design, architecture and arts, and humanities.
Academic Entry Requirements
Applicants may be offered admission to Swinburne after the following has been assessed-
- Formal academic qualifications and results
- Meet course prerequisites

- Personal aptitude and capabilities (for some courses)
Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)
To be eligible for admission on the basis of STAT, the applicant must be a non - year 12 applicant or a recent year 12 student within the last two years. Applicants must also be at least 19 years old by 31st December in the year they commence their studies. Swinburne will consider the STAT results for admission under the following conditions:
- if the applicant has no prior or recent secondary school results or work experience which meets the entry requirements for the course
- No recent TAFE or university results that could be transferred for entry
- TAFE or other tertiary results with undergrad assessment
Note: The STAT test results are valid for two years and it will be used to determine the selection rank. To receive an offer of admission, applicants must also meet the course prerequisites and additional entry requirements.
Admission Information on the Basis of the Educational Background of the Applicant
Admission is pursued by a diverse range of applicants. The specific information about admission to courses as per different educational background is described below:
- Applicants with Higher Education Study
- If higher education study either completed or not completed was undertaken in the last seven years, those results are considered
- If the results are from more than seven years ago and not completed, those will not be considered. Such applicants can sit for STAT.
- If the applicant has completed the course more than seven years ago, those results and qualifications are considered depending on its suitability for the chosen course of the applicant.
- Applicants with Vocational Education and Training (VET)
- Swinburne considers the result of the applicant’s previous vocational education and training provided that the applicant has completed his/her training and was graded.
- If the VET study was ungraded, the applicant may have to sit for STAT.
- In case, the applicant is unable to meet other admission requirements to their preferred course, they will be offered an alternative course or pathway option
- Applicants with Work and Life Experience
- Applicants who completed their Year 12 education in the last two to seven years, their results can still be used for admission to an undergraduate course.
- If applicants completed their secondary education more than seven years ago or do not have any formal qualifications, applicants may provide a CV, description of current/ past employment, and recommendation letters from employers.
- For entry to some undergraduate courses, the applicant may sit for STAT
- Applicants with Recent Secondary Education (within the past two years)
- For applicants who recently completed Year 12 education, admission is primarily based on whether the applicant has completed the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or an interstate or international Year 12 qualification.
- Swinburne assess the secondary study as indicated by the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)
- Applicants who completed Interstate Year 12 education in their state meet Swinburne’s entry requirement. They will be ranked for selection based on ATAR.
- Applicants from Queensland will be assessed using comparable tables of Queensland OP and the ATAR.
