It was approved by the Council of Architecture, New Delhi and is affiliated to the Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin. B. Arch Degree course with a sanctioned intake of 40 students is being conducted on self financing mode.
T K M College of Engineering, the first Government- aided engineering college in Kerala, is situated in the cashew hub of Kerala, City of Kollam. Spanning over an area of more than 25 Acres, it is ideally located, in Karikode, on the Kollam- Chenkotta road, about 5 kilometers from the heart of the city. The campus, a distinctive landmark that cuts above the rest is built in the aesthetic Indo Saracenic architectural style with mughal influence .
The college is the first and foremost institution for technical education, run by the T K M Educational Trust, headed by Janab Shahal Hassan Musaliar. The foundation stone of the college was laid in the year 1956 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of Independent India. The college was formally inaugurated by Prof. Humayun Kabir, the then Minister for Scientific and Cultural Affairs, Govt. of India, on 3rd July, 1958.
At its start, the college began its stride with the three basic branches of engineering – Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Today it is a renowned technical institution in India, offering courses in eight branches of engineering at under graduation level, eight M-Tech programs and MCA program at post graduate level.

The College is also an approved research centre for Mechanical and Civil Engineering. It is supported by about 500 eminent staff members; teaching and non-teaching, and about 1000 students are admitted every year in various disciplines. The college is affiliated to the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University and is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. All the B. Tech courses, M. Tech Structural Engineering and M. Tech Industrial Refrigeration are accredited by NBA, among them B. Tech Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering got the status of six year accreditation. The college is also accredited by NAAC with A Grade.
The College runs on a well- structured platform, that offers various infrastructure facilities such as the Central library, Department libraries, Central and Departmental Computer facilities, Hostels for boys and girls of various semesters, Career Guidance and Placement Cell, Cooperative Society Store, Medical Cell and Sports facilities like Football court, Basket Ball courts, Tennis Court, Volley Ball court, Shuttle-Badminton Court, Multi-Gymnasium, Hockey Practice Court, Table Tennis Hall and a Cricket pitch. The College has a common auditorium and seminar halls for various departments, equipped with modern audio-visual presentation devices. The students participate regularly in events conducted by various student branches like the N.S.S, N.A.S.A, I.E.E.E., I.S.T.E, S.S.A., I.I.C.E and the college union.
An active Career- Guidance and Placement Cell functions here that periodically conducts personality workshops, mock tests for competitive examinations and ensures a considerable number of placements for students from this institution.
In 2008, T K M College of Engineering celebrated its 50th anniversary in a magnificent way. A series of commemorative lectures were conducted as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations. Many renowned speakers and orators made their presence to speak on the contributions of the great Thangal Kunju Musaliar in the educational, economical and socio-cultural scenario of Kollam. The valedictory function of the Golden Jubilee celebrations was inaugurated by the former President of India, Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam.
The foundation stone for a grand Convention Center has been laid in the campus that is expected to accommodate a gathering of 3000 people and promises to be an exemplary monument in the history of T K M College of Engineering
