Legal education at ULC equips the students for the complete spectrum of career opportunities available to lawyers, and provides them with the capability to adapt to the rapid pace of change that characterizes modern legal practice. As a testimony to this fact, among ULC’s graduates are many Supreme Court and High Court Justices, renowned public servants, bureaucrats, lawyers and academicians of repute.

University Law College, Bangalore is committed towards imparting quality education, promoting scientific tempo and blending theoretical knowledge with practical skills. The institution aims at pursuing academic excellence through teaching, research, publications and by providing access to all sections of the society to pursue higher education for promoting leadership qualities among students making them socially sensitive citizens.

History

The erstwhile Government of Mysore (now the State of Karnataka) started the college in the year 1948. It was previously known as the Bangalore Government Law College. Prof. Narayan Rao was the first Principal of the college. From 1964, ULC was brought under the Faculty of Law of Bangalore University. ULC started with a two-year course, and later offered a three-year postgraduate LL.B. program till 1986.

Pioneering the 5-Year Integrated B.A.L, LL.B. Program

In the year 1982, Prof. Dr. V.B Coutinho became the Principal of ULC. During his term, the college emphatically transformed into one of the first professional law colleges in the country by introducing the five-year integrated B.A.L,LL.B. program for the first time, in the academic year 1986-87. This was an initiative to achieve higher standards in legal education. A few years thereafter, the Committee on Subordinate Legislation of the 10th Lok Sabha, the Committee of Judges on Legal Education appointed by the Chief Justice of India in 1993, and the All India Law Ministers Conference in 1994 unanimously recommended the adoption of the five year LL.B. program as the course for professional legal education.

Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law, Bangalore University offers courses both at UG and PG level. The University Law College (ULC) is the only constituent college of law directly administered by the Bangalore University. ULC hosts well-qualified and experienced faculty and a resourceful administrative staff. The visiting guest-lecturers and professors, mostly legal practitioners, lend flexibility and expertise to the academic staff of ULC.

In the era of privatization and commercialization of education in India, ULC continues to uphold the philanthropic tradition in Indian education by dispensing affordable legal education and reaching out to every strata of the society. With a fee structure that amounts to a fraction of the fee charged by most private legal institutions in India, ULC continues to provide its students with the platform to equip themselves with knowledge they can apply to influence legal and social causes.

Campus

From the early days of its inception, ULC was situated in the City Campus of Bangalore University, close to the legislative and highest judicial seat of the state. However, at the beginning of the academic year 2006-07, ULC shifted from the heritage campus to a new spacious building situated in the sprawling Jnana Bharathi Campus of Bangalore University, which is located on 1,100 acres (4.5 km2) of land. This state-of-the-art new facility hosts eight class rooms where formal teaching sessions are conducted for both B.A.,LL.B (Hons) and LL.M. programmes, two seminar halls, an independent library and an administrative block. The Bangalore University canteen and other shared facilities are located close by. This new eco-friendly campus is also equipped with rain water harvesting system and wi-fi facility. In addition to these facilities, though ULC is a non-residential law college, separate hostel facilities are available for male and female students within the Jnana Bharathi campus of Bangalore University.

Library

The ULC library is a depository for a large collection of treatises, journals, research papers, documents and other reference material on national and international law. The library has a total collection of more than 45,000 books, 16,000 journals and 18,000 other reference materials. It also houses computers with internet connectivity to aid students and teachers in their research.

Student Activities

The student initiative at ULC is its greatest strength and a spirit of collaboration reigns throughout a student’s stay at ULC.

Outside the classroom, there are a rich variety of student interest groups which allow students to pursue every possible interest. Although originally students from urban and rural parts of Karnataka looked at ULC to pursue the study of law, today students come from every region of the country and several foreign countries as well.

NSS

The National Service Scheme is an Indian government-sponsored programme under the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. ULC established a NSS unit in 2008, with about a hundred student-volunteers. The NSS unit at ULC has been actively involved in many social service activities in rural areas and has organized blood donation camps. NSS volunteers have also contributed towards the eco-friendly theme of the new campus by enriching the greenery in the campus with many plants.

All India Moot Court Competition

The annual national level moot court competition hosted by ULC is the flagship activity of the student body, the Society of Mooters. The competition attracts participants from law colleges all across the country. The Judges of the High Court of Karnataka preside over the finals of the moot court competition. The Twenty first edition of the All India Moot Court Competition of ULC will be held in February, 2017. This year we are very proud to announce that 21st edition of AIMCC, 2017 is organised in association with National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi.

Mooting in University Law College

Mooting in modern world of Legal studies has become a vital tool in preparing a law student for the profession. University Law College takes great pride in the fact that it enjoys an unmatched track record of producing great distinguished Advocates at all levels of the Courts.

The University Law College has not only academic laurels to its credit, but has also excelled in various extra-curricular activities which most importantly includes mooting. The students of University Law College have had the privilege of representing not just the college but also the Country. Various teams of the college have been taking part in many prestigious National Moots such as the The Bar Council Moot ,Surana and Surana Moots, Corporate Law Moot by the NLU Delhi, Annual Moot Court by School of Excellence, Chennai and many other International Moot Court Competitions such as Jessup, Stetson International Environmental Law Moot, Manfred Lachs International Space Law Moot, Vienna Arbitration Moot, Hong Kong Arbitration Moot, WTO Moot and other celebrated Moot Court Competitions. The Students have also created a niche for themselves on the National and International Level by winning accolades and respect of their peers for their skills, professionalism and talent. To further this cause and to give students an introduction to the moot, an intra college moot is also being organised every year.

University Law College has always been proud of itself for the fact that it empowers its students with the technical knowledge and skills required to become responsible Advocates. Mooting has therefore become an indispensible co-curricular activity for the students of University Law College. Since Mooting became an integral part of the academic life of every student of University Law College, laurels achieved by students in the field of mooting have helped them achieve a successful career in their chosen field of practice.

Sports Activities

ULC regularly organizes annual sports day and other sporting events such as intra-collegiate football, basketball and cricket tournaments for both boys and girls.

Cultural and Literary Festivals

ULC also hosts an annual inter-collegiate literary and cultural festival, in addition to a host of intra-college cultural activities. Having successfully organized such festivals in the past under different names, ULC continues this tradition with its law festival called Jus Celebre.

Legal aid and literacy programme

This is one of the components of the LL.B programme which the ULC puts its heart and soul in its realization. Students of the law programme visit villages and enquire into the deficiencies prevailing in the villages through a scientific questionnaire. This includes the day to day problems they face, their level of literacy and the lack of legal knowledge. Through this method the students ascertain the socio-legal problems in these villages. In this programme a group of students assisted by a staff member would provide the necessary advice to tackle their routine legal, social and economic problems. University Law College has been consistently holding this programme since the introduction of the 5 years LL.B programme in the year 1985-86.

Court and Jail visit

Another component of legal education is court and jail visit. The students of the 4thand 5thyear are made to visit courts and the central prison. On appointed days they observe the proceedings of the Court and record their observations in diary for submission. This compulsory exercise provides students first hand information about the functioning of the courts and also an insight regarding the application of substantive and procedural laws.

Campus Placement Cell

The Campus Placement Cell is a student – run body of University Law College, Bengaluru, functioning within the College framework to provide for placements as well as internship opportunities to the students. The Placement Cell functions independently throughout the academic year under the supervision of the College – appointed Faculty Advisor, the Chairman and the Principal of the College.

The Campus Placement Cell strives to provide a platform for students to receive internships, placements and any other employment opportunities by approaching potential Recruiters and inviting them to conduct on-campus or offcampus placements, interviews and recruitment processes. It seeks to promote a healthy relationship between the students, the College Faculty and the esteemed Recruiters, for the ultimate benefit of all involved.

The Placement Cell has invited many leading law firms and offices for Campus Recruitment and Internship Opportunities. Some of them include Dua Associates, King and Partridge, Anup S Shah Law Firm, L & T Constructions, Kings and Stubbs, Aditya Narayan and Co,  Shiva and Co., Spectrum Legal, M/s Sundarasamy and Ramdas, Just Law, Equitas Legal, Agraa Legal, Pragati Law Chambers, Thakur & Sinha Law Offices LLP, Diwakara & Associates.  Many of our students are placed in these leading law firms and companies with attractive pay packages.

Placement process has been initiated for the academic year 2017-18 and potential recruiters are invited to register for the same.
