In 1987, the Government of Bihar passed an ordinance which led to the establishment of the educational institution. Named after the renowned Nalanda University, its aim is to impart education to the people who do not have the time to attend school or colleges on a regular basis, the housewives, the elderlies, people who belong to economically weaker section of the society.
It offers undergraduate degrees both in arts and science subjects, and Ph.D. programmes. Beside these it offers postgraduate programmes in the following subjects- Political Science, Urdu, Physics, Zoology, Economics, Sanskrit, Botany. The University also provides several certificate and post graduate diploma courses.

Anyone taking admission to certificate courses should have passed the matriculation exam. For postgraduate programmes, the eligibility is a bachelor’s degree. While a candidate who is attempting to secure admission in any of the Ph.D. programmes should have a master’s degree. The admission form of the university can be acquired through a draft of rupees 450 which is available at the sales counter. It can also be taken by sending a draft of rupees 400, to the Nalanda Open University.
