Named after Francis Xavier, the college was established by the contribution of Society of Jesus, a Catholic minority religious body. In 1862, it was affiliated to University of Calcutta. It was ranked 10th in Indian Ranking 2019 for colleges. Over the years, the college has made significant contributions in the educational field. To celebrate that, the Indian post put up a commemorative stamp in its honour in 1985.
St. Xaviers College, Kolkata Admission Process
St. Xavier’s College has minimum eligibility criteria for the candidates to fill up the application forms. It does not hold any admission test for the following courses - B.Com. Honours (Morning and Evening), B.A.- Honours in English, Honours in Political Science, Honours in Sociology, Honours in Bengali, B. Sc. - Honours in Economics, Honours in Physics, Honours in Chemistry, Honours in Statistics, Honours in Mathematics, Honours in Microbiology, Honours in Biotechnology (Integrated), and B.A. General. The college prepares a merit list according to the marks obtained by the candidates in the 12th standard exam. However, it conducts an admission test for honours in B.M.S., honours in B. Sc. Mass Communication and Videography, M. Sc. Multimedia (Integrated), and a merit list is prepared accordingly.
