Tamil University was established in 1981 by a group of veteran scholars at Thanjavur. The negligence for the Tamil Language during the British rule has led to the establishment of Tamil University. It was recognized as University by UGC in 1983. The campus is widespread across 850 across with antique building structures.

Tamil University Admissions are done through an entrance test and counseling process to various Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Diploma and Research programmes. The University also offers distance education programmes under the Directorate of Distance Education of the Tamil University.

Tamil University aims to achieve advancement of high-level learning and research on Tamil language, literature, and culture. • Admission to Tamil University will be through an entrance test as per UGC norms. The test will be conducted in the Tamil University campus. 
• Applicants will be called for counselling based on their entrance test results. Candidates failing to attend the counselling will be rejected. 
• Applicants will be selected based on the entrance test, qualifying examination, counselling and roaster system followed by the Government of Tamilnadu.
• Admissions for Ph.D. at Tamil University will be based on entrance test and postgraduation marks, selection will be made by HOD with reference to the reservation rules of Government of Tamil Nadu. 

Cutoffs

• The cutoffs for different courses vary from one another.
• The cutoffs are based on a merit list prepared by the Tamil University every year.
• The merit list is calculated by taking into consideration the 10+2 marks of the candidate.
• The cutoffs will be put up in the main office of the Tamil University and the official website.
• Generally, the cutoffs range between 45% to 50%.
