The university features four campuses, namely Thane campus, Kalina campus, Fort campus, and Ratnagiri campus. The central library of the university is located at Sir Rajabai Clock tower. Another library is set in the Kalina campus which is famously known as Jawaharlal Nehru library.
The university began its classes with the departments of arts and medicine. The institution awarded its first degree in 1862. In 1996, the university's name was changed from the University of Bombay to the University of Mumbai.

- When it comes to admission for undergraduate programmes, a candidate is supposed to have passed 10+2 with a minimum 45% aggregate marks.
- To take admission in postgraduate programmes, candidates must have a bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks.
- Additionally, the university accepts scores of CAT, XAT, ATMA, GMAT, and MAT entrance examinations. And, the benchmark score for admission to postgraduate programmes differs for different entrance examinations.
